Advanced Classes

Boat Handling

Boat Handling (formerly Seamanship) gives you real-world boat handling and boating skills. You’ll boat with more confidence and feel more self-assured on the water.

Boat Handling gives you the boating skills and knowledge you need to handle your boat like a pro — whether you are on a trailer or at the dock and in a lake, river or salt water. This instructor-led, online course covers boat construction and function, your responsibilities as skipper, and getting your boat ready to launch or underway from a dock. You’ll learn boat handling and maneuvering skills that allow you to boat under vaious conditions in close quarters on the open water. You’ll get expert advice on the rules of the road, anchoring, emergencies and tying basic knots. Boat Handling is six, two-hour sessions:

  • Knots and Line Handling: Knots you need to know, how to tie them and when to use them
  • Boating with Confidence: Handling your boat underway, understand how boat design and propulsion impact handling
  • Anchoring with Assurance: Don’t get carried away, understand the dynamics of anchor design, chain and line in anchoring situations
  • Confidence in docking and undocking: go slow and slow speed maneuvering considerations
  • Nautical Rules of the Road: A practical approach
  • Emergencies On Board: Preparing for handling common problems

Instructors: A team of instructors each with decades of boating experience, most have achieved Senior Navigator and Boat Operator Certification – Coastal Navigator from America’s Boating Club, a couple have commercial captain licenses, and most importantly each session is directed by an ABC Certified Instructor for teaching boating classes.
