Location: Buford area of Lake Lanier. Specific location will be communicated after registering. 

This 6-hour course includes a small amount of classroom time up-front to discuss concepts of boat handling, then we get onto a single-engine power boat provided by the club and head out on the water for the rest of the time. We review, demonstrate and then coach the student through several common maneuvers including getting underway from a dock or slip, returning to a dock or slip, close quarters maneuvering in a marina, getting on plane, coming off plane, trimming the boat for optimal performance, slow-speed, high-speed and even backing through a slalom course, anchoring, proper use of mooring lines and fenders and more. 

Each student receives a reference text, DVD and certificate acknowledging their training.

Crew at the Helm

This 4-hour seminar, also known as Partner in Command or The First Mate’s Course, is designed to ensure that the primary Captain’s partner is capable of basic boat handling if needed in an emergency or just for fun.  A short classroom session is followed by time on the water in a single-engine power boat provided by the club. Included in the seminar are actions in response to an emergency, how to communicate for help, getting back to safe harbor, basic boat handling, proper use of fenders, lines and knots, safety equipment and more. The four hours are split starting in the classroom then on-the-water skills practice.

Jump Start

This 2-hour course helps the owner of a boat get a Jump Start on its handling and operation. This course is taught on the student’s boat and is tailored to the individual student’s desired areas of focus. This may include boat handling, trailering, anchoring, emergency procedures and more.

This course is scheduled at a mutually convenient time for the student and the instructor. All instructors are Coast Guard licensed Captains. If interested in the Jump Start course click on the Jump Start Interest Form button. Our Captains are taking some extended time off during the holidays. One of the ABCA Captains will contact in January 2025 to schedule training.
