The America’s Boating Club Atlanta was founded as Atlanta Power Squadron on 16 July 1953 with 21 charter members. When founded it offered classes in Seamanship, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigation, Navigation, Engine Maintenance, Sail, and Weather. Courses added since then include Piloting, Marine Electronics, Instructor Qualification and Cruise Planning.
Some years ago, the Atlanta Power Squadron added the word “Sail” to its official name in recognition of the large number of sailing enthusiasts among the membership. Today, we are America’s Boating Club Atlanta (ABCA), a unit of America’s Boating Club a registered trademark of the United States Power Squadrons, the nation’s largest recreational boating organization. As America’s Boating Club Atlanta we embrace all forms of recreational boating from our beginnings with power, then sail and now with many enthusiasts of paddle craft.
Dedicated to boating that is Safe, Smart and Fun, ABCA joins the 450 other local America’s Boating Clubs across the country in pursuing those goals. ABCA was formed in 1953 and currently has about 250 members. Many ABCA members boat on Lake Lanier, although members have boats from the Gulf Coast to the Chesapeake Bay.
